Types of systems
Mechanical Ventilation: Uses fans and motorized inlets to actively control airflow. This is the standard for modern broiler houses and can be categorized further.
Tunnel Ventilation: A specific type of mechanical system where fans are placed at one end of the house and air inlets are at the opposite end. The fans pull air through the house, creating a high-velocity breeze that cools the birds.
Minimum Ventilation: A mode used in colder weather to provide just enough air to remove moisture and ammonia without causing significant heat loss.
Natural Ventilation: Relies on natural forces like wind and the "stack effect" (hot air rising) to move air. It often uses side curtains or ridge vents but is less effective and harder to control than mechanical systems.
Auxiliary systems
Evaporative Cooling:
Can be used alongside tunnel ventilation in hot weather. It works by using fans to pull air through water-soaked pads, cooling the air through evaporation. This system is often placed on the outside of the inlets to prevent excessive humidity inside the house.
Heating:
Ventilation systems work in tandem with heating systems (like radiant or forced-air heaters) to maintain a stable and appropriate temperature for the birds, especially during the first few weeks of life.
